Akal Academy — a space for clear thinking
About Us

Teaching AI With Patience and Purpose

Akal Academy began with a simple concern: too many people were being sold the idea that AI skills could be picked up painlessly. We exist because we disagree.

Our Story

Where Akal Academy Came From

Akal is a Malay word that means reason, intellect, and sound thinking. We chose it because it describes exactly what we are trying to cultivate — not the ability to run a script, but the ability to understand what the script is doing and why it might fail.

The school was founded in Shah Alam by a small group of engineers and educators who had spent years working with data and machine learning in industry. When we began teaching on the side, we noticed that most online courses prioritised pace over depth. Learners were completing programs quickly but struggling to apply anything in practice.

We redesigned our courses around a different idea: give people fewer concepts per week, let them work through real exercises, and make sure a tutor is available when things do not make sense. It takes longer. The results are more durable.

Our Mission

What We Are Here to Do

We want to make AI development genuinely accessible to people in Malaysia and the wider region — not by lowering the standard, but by teaching it properly. That means honest course descriptions, realistic timelines, and tutors who give thoughtful feedback rather than automated responses.

Our courses are designed for people who take learning seriously and want to understand what they are doing. We do not oversell outcomes. We do not promise that a six-week course will make you an AI engineer. We do promise that by the end of it, you will understand the foundations clearly.

"We measure success not by how many people finish our courses, but by how many feel they genuinely understand the material when they do."

Our Standards

How We Keep Quality Consistent

Reviewed Curriculum

Course materials are reviewed and updated each intake. We check that exercises reflect current tools and that explanations remain accurate as the field moves forward.

Tutor Response Standards

Tutors respond to learner questions within one working day. Feedback on submitted work is written, specific, and addressed to what the learner actually did.

Honest Assessment

We do not hand out completion markers as a courtesy. Exercises and projects are assessed against clear criteria, and we flag areas that need more work.

Data Privacy

Learner data is used only for course administration and communication. We do not share personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Small Cohort Sizes

We limit enrolment numbers per cohort so that tutors can give attention to each learner. This affects revenue, but it protects the quality of instruction.

Ongoing Improvement

After each cohort we gather feedback and review what worked and what did not. Changes are documented and tracked across intake cycles.

Our Approach

AI Education That Respects the Learner

Akal Academy sits in Shah Alam, Selangor, and serves learners across Malaysia and the region through fully online delivery. We focus exclusively on AI development — specifically on the three areas where we believe most learners need the most support: understanding data, building models, and working with language-based AI systems.

We teach in English and structure our courses to work for people with varying professional backgrounds. Someone coming from finance, healthcare, or education can follow the Foundations course without a prior computing degree. What matters is whether they are willing to think carefully about the material and work through the exercises honestly.

Our tutors are working professionals, not career educators. They bring current industry knowledge into the classroom, which means learners hear about how these tools are used in practice — the limitations, the edge cases, and the parts that are less tidy than textbooks suggest.

We price our courses to be accessible within the Malaysian market. The Foundations course begins at RM 140, which we believe is fair for six weeks of structured instruction with tutor support. We do not charge for features learners do not use. There are no hidden fees.

If you are looking for a school that will tell you exactly what each course involves, who it is for, and what you are likely to be able to do at the end of it — Akal Academy may be the right place. We encourage you to read the full course descriptions and reach out with any questions before enrolling.
